It's around three in the afternoon and you feel like you just want to take a nap. You can't focus or get much work done without feeling like you could fall asleep at your desk. I know the feeling all to well. I've spent time finding ways to cope and deal with this feeling in a healthy way rather than chugging a coffee in the middle of the afternoon. I wanted to be more creative and find natural ways to boost my energy levels and maintain my productivity levels through the entire day. Here some of my solutions that have truly helped me through my journey with fatigue.
Pay attention to what you are eating for lunch. To maintain good energy levels throughout the remainder of the day, it is important to eat a lunch that is concentrated in proteins and healthy fats. This will balance your blood sugar (ex. avocado, nuts and seeds, olive oil based dressings, eggs, tofu, chicken ect.) Pay attention for foods how foods make you feel. Notice when foods cause you to feel sluggish or provide you with energy. A food journal will help you assess what you are eating and how it makes your body feel.
It's important to be exposed to light throughout the day. Taking a walk or sitting at a desk with sunlight will help improve productivity and your mood. Sunlight signals your brain not to release the hormones that make you tired and sleepy. Being exposed to sunlight helps your body's internal clock stay on track.
Take deep breaths. I know it sounds silly but something as simple as taking the time to breathe deeply and focus on your breath can have a profound impact on your energy levels. Sit tall and breathe from your belly. Deep breathing sends oxygen through your body which wakes up your body.
Lastly drink enough water. I can not stress this enough. Even 1% dehydration can affect your energy levels and cause fatigue. This is not only important for your energy levels but your all around wellbeing. Set alarms or reminders on your phone or get creative with ways to track your water intake.
